THE BAY WINDOW- CABINETRY FOLLOWS THE CURVE
The most beautiful homes are those that truly reflect the people who live in them. Whether building a new home or renovating an existing one, every space should be thoughtfully planned around how you live, with architectural details that feel as though they were always meant to be there.
At AMI Design, we believe creating an exceptional home begins with understanding your lifestyle, your vision, and what makes a home feel uniquely yours. From the initial space planning to custom millwork, architectural details, and carefully selected furnishings, every element should work together to create a home that truly reflects how you live.
My appreciation for thoughtful design and fine craftsmanship began long before I became an interior designer. I grew up around my father's cabinetmaking shop, watching the care and attention he put into everything he created. He began learning his trade in Italy at just ten years old, and every project started with a hand-drawn sketch, designed specifically for each client.
I loved watching those sketches come to life as beautiful, finished pieces of cabinetry, crafted to be enjoyed for generations. That experience stayed with me and continues to influence the way I approach design today. There's still something incredibly rewarding about seeing an idea that began on paper become a beautiful part of someone's home.
In this short walk-through, I share that story and one of my favorite details from a recent home office.
Starting With a Conversation and a Sketch
Our process usually begins with a conversation, getting to know our clients, understanding their vision, and putting those first ideas on paper through hand-drawn sketches.
Whether we're designing an entire kitchen, a beautifully detailed library, a dressing room, or cabinetry that becomes part of the architecture, we're thinking about much more than storage. We're thinking about how each space will be used, how it will feel, and how it connects to the rest of the home.
On this home office, our client meetings turned into working design sessions. We drew ideas by hand, talked them through, set some aside and refined others. We weren't only deciding how the office should look. We were figuring out how our clients would really use it every day.
That sketch then became a full set of drawings: the floor plan, an elevation of each wall, and the details needed to build it.
FROM CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES TO FINISHED DRAWINGS
The Door Detail
One of my favorite details in this home office is how we incorporated the doors into the custom millwork. Our clients wanted the office to feel open and connected to the rest of the home, while still having the option for privacy when needed. Rather than introducing traditional doors that would interrupt the beautiful cabinetry and architectural details, we designed them to blend seamlessly into the surrounding bookcases.
When they're open, the doors appear like panels on the side of the bookcase without restricting the entrance to the room. The cabinetry and surrounding walls read as one continuous design. When our clients need privacy, they simply draw the doors closed transforming the office to a quiet private retreat,
These are the details that can transform a beautiful room into something truly special.
When a detail is done right, it looks like it was always meant to be there.
Every Wall Has a Purpose
The same thinking went into the rest of the office. The cabinetry beneath the windows follows the curve of the bay instead of fighting it, so there's storage and a place for favorite things right where the light is best. The television is set into a built-in wall of drawers and shelves, so it feels like part of the room rather than an afterthought. And the ceiling detail overhead ties the whole space together.
Beauty and Function, Designed Together
For us, custom design isn't about adding detail simply for the sake of decoration.
It's about finding thoughtful solutions that make a home more beautiful and more enjoyable to live in.
Before we design a single cabinet, we ask questions. How do you use the room? What do you need to store? How should one space connect to another? What would make your everyday life better?
From there, we develop the space planning, architectural details, cabinetry, finishes, lighting, and furnishings together.

Why Early Planning Matters
When building a new home or undertaking a major renovation, I always encourage our clients to think about the interior architecture from the very beginning.
Some of the most beautiful and functional details of a home need to be considered while the architectural plans are still being developed. The concealed doors in this home office are a perfect example. We were able to integrate them seamlessly into the bookcases because we planned for the necessary depth and clearances from the start.
Custom cabinetry, concealed doors, integrated lighting, ceiling details, and even furniture placement all play an important role in how a home is designed. These elements should be considered together, rather than as separate decisions made along the way.
By becoming involved early in the process, we can work closely with the architect and builder to ensure that these details are incorporated into the plans before construction begins. This allows us to create a more cohesive design, avoid costly changes later, and make the most of every space.
It's one of the reasons I believe interior design should be part of the conversation from the very beginning.
A Personal Approach to Every Home
There's something very special about starting with a simple sketch and watching an idea become a beautiful, finished detail created specifically for each client. I first experienced that in my father's cabinetmaking shop, and it's something that has stayed with me throughout my career
I believe every home should have its own personality, just as every client has their own way of living. That's what makes the design process so rewarding.
Whether we're designing a custom home from the ground up or reimagining an existing one, our goal is always to create interiors that are beautiful, functional, and deeply personal.
If you're planning a new home or major renovation, we'd love the opportunity to hear about your project and explore what we can create together.
